Ski Town, USA, where cowboys wear GoPro’s, kids wear Spyders, and Marmots wear season passes. Here, “crime” means skiing out of bounds or riding your horse on the sidewalk, because bad things, "city" things, just don’t happen in Steamboat Springs. So when 19 year-old Callie Boone disappears into thin air, it's logical to accept a simple, harmless explanation—maybe a spur-of-the-moment trip to Cancun, or a long weekend up with her boyfriend. Problem is, she can’t afford a vacation, and doesn’t have a boyfriend. Callie’s therapist knows things about her young client that raise more sinister possibilities, but she can’t talk about it. Shrinks have that “client confidentiality” thing, and anyway, going to the cops short on facts won’t get much attention. She has to tell someone, and who better than her psychologist colleague, Whittier Brand? Whit’s no math whiz, but he knows things don’t add up. Once he tackles the problem things get complex, murders multiply, factors divide, and the solution seems incomprehensible. Enter Anna, Whit’s dropout wife-cum-lawyer, Saul, a free-wheeling ex-cop from Chicago, Jesús, an undocumented immigrant, and of course, the Shack Pack. If you like intelligent thrillers, kick off your ski boots, pour a glass of something warm, and snuggle in by the fire. It’s a tale well told.

CROSSING THE BORDERLINE by Ambrose Richardson is my kind of mystery novel for an evening of relaxation. It is the time honor style of a traditional who-done-it with a charming sleuth who depends on his own powers of deduction to solve the murder.Dr. Whitter Brand is a psychologist settled into a comfortable practice in a small town deep in the mountains of Colorado. His wife of 26 years, Anna has returned to law school to achieve a long dream of a life of her own. Whit is having trouble adjusting to Anna's decision, but he finds the stimulation of weekend's family to have advantages.
A young girl discovers through treatment by an associate that she was molested as a child by her father. Against advice she is determined to confront her father. No one knows if she actually sees him before she disappears. The father has no level except his own desire, but fate may play a sinister hand.
This was a fun read with fully developed characters, it is easy to envision the guys sitting around having coffee. In fact, I see the same scene every morning. The tradition doesn't change from small town to small town.
CROSSING THE BORDERLINE is the traditional mystery novel to take to bed with you. All you need do is remember to turn out the light when it gets too late.

Crossing the Borderline a Whittier Brand mystery Ambrose Richardson 9781452888538 Books Reviews
Fun read...and original with good plot. If you like Jonathan Kellerman and Stephen White this will definitely appeal to you.
This book is like an Amtrak train leaving the station. It pulls out slowly, you get familiar with your surroundings and begin to relax into the trip, and then things start happening. Pretty soon you realize you're moving at express speed, stuff is banging around, people are bug-eye scared, and you're holding on for whatever's to around the next curve and wondering if you'll stay on the tracks. I liked the ride. A lot.
Here is a fast-paced thriller that will take you for a ride. When psychiatrist, Dr. Whittier Brand trusts his gut and leads his colleaques, clients, dog and family into the heart of an unsolved murder mystery, you better hold on. From the little town in northwestern Colorado of Steamboat Springs, all the way through Durango and down into Mexico, this suspenseful story twists and turns like a genuine drive through the Rockies. Crossing the Borderline is a great debut novel and could possibly be an international best seller as more people read about and discover the landscape and community of the wide open American West.
If you're a wanna-be psychologist, you'll love this Whittier Brand tale of murder, child-abuse, smuggling, and human arrogance. From the peaceful environs of Steamboat Springs, Dr. Brand's expertise and instincts are stretched from the therapy-room to Mexico and Canada. Beware of jumping to conclusions or predicting outcomes because you'll likely be incorrect as this impressive thriller unravels.
